What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breasts used to detect:

Early breast cancer
Calcifications
Lumps or asymmetries
Architectural distortions
Changes in dense breast tissue

It is the gold standard for breast cancer screening worldwide.

Who Should Get a Mammogram?

Age-Based Recommendations

Women 40 years & above → Yearly screening
Women 35–40 years → Screening based on risk
High-risk women (family history, BRCA, prior chest radiation) → May require earlier and additional imaging (MRI/USG)

Symptom-Based

You should get a mammogram if you notice:

A new lump
Breast pain or thickening
Nipple discharge
Skin dimpling
Change in breast size/shape

Mammography is superior for detecting:

Early cancers
Microcalcifications
Architectural distortion

Ultrasound is complementary for:

Dense breasts
Cyst vs solid lesion differentiation

What to Expect During Your Mammogram

Registration & Brief History

You’ll be asked about age, symptoms, pregnancies, breastfeeding, and prior scans.

Preparation

You will be asked to remove jewellery
A dedicated changing room is provided
Deodorants/powders should be avoided (they can mimic calcifications)

The Mammogram

The breast is positioned and gently compressed for a few seconds. Compression:

Improves clarity
Reduces radiation
Is quick and tolerable

Ultrasound (if needed)

Sometimes Ultrasound correlation is done for clarity this is routine and not a cause for concern.

Report & Consultation

Your images are reviewed by Dr. Ashish Dua, and a detailed report is provided the same day.

Safety & Radiation FAQs

Is radiation harmful?

Digital mammography uses very low radiation, comparable to a few weeks of natural background exposure.

Is it painful?

Some pressure is felt for a few seconds. We use a gentle compression system to minimize discomfort.

Can I get a mammogram during my period?

Yes but the best time (least discomfort) is 1 week after your period.

Can I do it while breastfeeding?

Usually deferred unless clinically indicated. Ultrasound is preferred for breastfeeding women.

Dense breasts can make cancer harder to see.
